About Boy Scout Troop 31
At Boy Scout Troop 31, we emphasize character development, citizenship, self-reliance and leadership development presented in a way that is both enjoyable and worthwhile. At Troop 31, we've been training leaders for over 100 years, and having a good time doing it!
Boy Scout Troop 31 was formed in April 1913. It is the longest established Boy Scout Troop in City of Rochester, and the second oldest troop in Monroe county and in Seneca Waterways Council. In fact, the Troop is older than Seneca Waterways Council, which was formed in 1918. The Boy Scouts of America was established in 1910, so Troop 31 was there at the beginning.
Since 1913, we've awarded over 183 Eagle Scout ranks, which is the highest honor earned as a boy scout. We are rich with experience, leadership, tradition, and good times. Boy Scout Troop 31 has always been sponsored by and held meetings at Third Presbyterian Church, which is located at the corner of Meigs Street and East Avenue in Rochester. Church membership is not necessary. We accept Scouts of any denomination.
Philosophy
The underlying philosophy of Boy Scout Troop 31 is that boys become leaders through the experience of leading: "Learning through doing." The Troop is run by the Scouts with the guidance and supervision of the Scoutmaster and the adult staff.
After 109 years, our parents and alumni are proud of the 183 scouts who have earned their rank of Eagle as members of Boy Scout Troop 31. The troop remains and focuses its leadership to be a truly "scout lead and a scout run troop." As leaders of Boy Scout Troop 31, the boys manage and control all aspects of the troop operations from planning a simple meal for a patrol, to running a meeting, or planning a Spring trip out West.
Our adult "advisers" provide guidance to the scout leadership so that they can accomplish the goals they have set for themselves and the troop. We follow the guidelines and philosophy outlined by the Wood Badge program ideals to mentor scouts in providing programs and activities that strengthen and develop character.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
The Vision of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare every eligible youth in America to become a Responsible, participating citizen and leader who is guided by the Scout Oath and Law. Membership in the Boy Scouts of America is open to all boys and young adults who meet the joining requirements. Membership in Scouting, advancement, and achievement of leadership in scouting units are open to all youth without regard to race or ethnic background and are based entirely upon individual merit.
